Visas
There are multiple visa categories in Australia: worker, migrant, visitor, student, employers, and refugee.
The typical visa for most expats is the 457 - Skill Worker visa. These are 4 year visas and require sponsorship from an employer (though in an odd twist you can start a business and then sponsor yourself). Spouses and de facto partners are covered under this visa as well.
You can use the Department of Immigration's Visa Wizard to find out which visa is right for you.

Compensation
It's important to understand the breakdown of your compensation when a job is offered to you. Compensation is not the same thing as salary. Rather, compensation includes salary as well as superannuation, which is a required payment into a private retirement fund. So if your compensation is $100,000 per year, it means that your salary is $91,000 and your payment into superannuation is $9,000.
